In her third week in Jerusalem, Noa begins a new job.

She works in a small bookstore near the station.

In the morning she looks for the way to the store.

“Excuse me, where is the bookstore?” she asks a man on the street.

“Keep going straight and turn left,” he answers.

Noa arrives on time and opens the shop with the manager.

“Good morning,” the manager says. “Today you’ll learn to help customers.”

After a few minutes, a woman enters with her daughter.

“We want to buy a book for learning Hebrew,” the woman says.

“Gladly,” Noa says. “What level are you looking for?”

“Beginner level, with pictures and vowel marks.”

Noa takes two books off the shelf.

“This book costs forty shekels, and the second costs sixty.”

“May I see both of them?” the girl asks.

“Of course,” Noa replies, and shows her the books.

The family chooses the first book.

Noa enters the price at the register, but accidentally types fifty.

The woman asks, “Why is the price on the receipt different?”

Noa checks and sees the mistake.

“You are right,” she says. “That is my mistake. I’m sorry!”

She corrects the price and gives the woman a new receipt.

“Thank you for your honesty,” the woman says.

At the end of the day Noa tells Maya, “I was a little afraid to admit the mistake, but I told the truth.”

Maya replies, “That takes courage, and you did the right thing.”

Conversational Hebrew note

Modern Israeli Hebrew uses present-tense gender forms: שׁוֹאֵל (he asks), שׁוֹאֶלֶת (she asks); עוֹנֶה (he answers), עוֹנָה (she answers). The Midrash story uses past forms שָׁאַל and עָנָה. In a shop, אֶפְשָׁר לִרְאוֹת? is a polite way to ask “May I see?” קַבָּלָה means a sales receipt here; in religious contexts it can refer to “received tradition” or Kabbalah.
